My work aims to challenge the norms of functional design, blending organic forms and hi-tech components. I constantly try to make the familiar unfamiliar by using materials in new ways or adding functions to normally static objects or by blending functions within things that are usually single-function. These concerns are evidenced in works like my “Barky Turntable” where the familiar form of a tree round is transformed into the unexpected, and where the rings of the tree are echoed in the grooves of a record. The resulting object is both familiar and comically strange, a functional design that seems both obvious and yet transformational.
